I'm compiling a non-SMP kernel for this machine (it's very slow, see the
end of the message) - but that will be 3.99.24. Are the "recent ACPI
changes" later than that (that is, in 4.99.1)?

This doesn't explain why my other system, also nForce and also SMP,
runs the 4.99.1 kernel just fine... (see the thread about 270s)?
