It occurred to me that Chris Kantarjiev wrote in gmane.os.netbsd.ports.x86-64:

That's just a cosmetic thing. These names reside in the kernel, and result
in large tables. For a normal system this isn't that much of an issue, 
but in case of a installation kernel this space be put to better use.
