I'm not sure I can follow you. What do you mean by "start meta-pkgs". 

If you want to run a GNOME desktop, there's two options:

1) Use gdm instead of xdm, by disabling xdm in /etc/rc.d and enabling gdm
2) run /usr/pkg/bin/gnome-session in .xinitrc
