Yep. I think the MPS tables in the BIOS of recent Acer amd64 laptops
may be bad. I saw the same problem on another Acer laptop.

A solution is probably to boot an ACPI kernel instead. But, this would
require you to rebuild the boot images, unless you can PXE boot over
the network..
