I set up an i386 installation from within the amd64 one, and, strange
enough, a GENERIC.MP kernel found the controller just fine. So it
appears to be an issue with the i386 installation kernel (the CD was
probably four weeks old).
Unfortunately, I cannot send a bootlog since the power supply has given
up the host with lightning ("sparc" ;) and a tiny puff of smoke. Peecee
hardware...
