I spent the morning getting my i386 laptop updated.  The problem also
occurs there (and -static makes that work, too).  So this is not AMD-
specific.  (Though the i386 gets a different, and perhaps useful,
backtrace in the core dump.  AMD64 gives a single ?? address.)

It did not occur in the previous -current (circa September of
last year) on the laptop, but since that time I think that a new
GCC was imported.  (^&
