Can you post some numbers for comparison, and for curiosity, before and
after?

FWIW, on i386, I get the following numbers from bytebench (grep 'System
Call Overhead'):

1.4.1:		 57000 lps
1.5_ALPHA2:	 50161 lps
1.6ZG:		314239 lps

I assume that big is better here (loops per second?).
