XFree86 4.x (3rd-party card) support on the AlphaServer 1200 has =20
never functioned, dating all the way back to Simon Burge's initial =20
Alpha XFree86 patches from January 2001. It locks up tight with no =20
debug information available. I believe it is something to do with =20
the multi-hose PCI architecture on those models (or it's a hardware =20
failure on my only testbed, and I've been running down rabbit holes =20
all these years).

XFree86 3.x on an 8-bit TGA card in a 1200 *may* still function, but =20
it's been half a decade since I tried.

Regarding the 164LX and other PCI-based Alphas, please see my mail on =20=

this list from May 14, 2006 entitled "XFree86 4.6.0 on Alpha" for =20
patches to compile and run XFree86 on these other PCI-based Alpha =20
models. S3 cards should work just fine, in my experience.

Keep patching, keep compiling, keep reporting!
