esiop(4) is used by many different machines (alpha, i386, sparc64,

Irrelevant on non-i386 hardware. The BIOS is not used. Usually the
settings of the card are set up by the card BIOS when the mainboard BIOS
runs the card BIOS. Non-i386 machines don't run the BIOS, so the card
usually starts up with default settings.

Yes. Maintenance for 3.x will last longer from now on then for 2.x
simply because 2.x was released earlier.
