Actually it is sometimes difficult to grok the misteries of a PCI bus.
I remember than adding a 2940UW card on a Sun ultra10 would make the 
openprom unable to see the VGA graphic card.
You might try swapping your Adaptec to another PCI slot, but you need a 
good amount of luck.
