But I've successfully installed NetBSD 1.6, 2.1 and 3.0 on
DEC 3000 Alpha hardware, and it's been fine.

How odd. WHat sort of serial cable are you using? Does it
connect up the MMJ plug to a PC-type serial port? If so, does
it connect all the handshaking wires, too?

I find that if I switch off the PC that's acting as a terminal,
the NetBSD console receives a BREAK and drops into the debugger.
If I switch the PC back on and type 'continue', it resumes just
fine.
