I'm sure that the 2.0.2 or 2.0 kernel works on this machine, I was using
it.

But I didn't install 2.0, I rather installed 1.6 and upgraded the kernel.
So I can confirm that at least the 1.6 install works.

I will try the 2.0.2 installer to see if I hit the same problem.
