What does ifconfig -m say ?
It's quite possible that this (quite old) adapter doesn't do n-way negotiation,
or doesn't do it properly. Or that it's just incompatible with this switch.

I've got strange interractions between some cisco and dlink switches, regarding
media negotiation.
