So, my Alphaserver 1000 decided to die. Power OK, fans OK, memory
(should be) OK. All cards removed, nada. Console output dead (serial +
video),
front-panel LCD dead.

Before I start *really* fiddling with it can anyone comment on what
sort of failures are to be expected when the Dallas 1287 RTC chip
(+ internal battery) loses steam ?

I'm just trying to pinpoint the fault somewhere and I'm hoping that the
CPU-card isn't it.

I'll get a replacement machine in a week but I'd like to get this one
going meanwhile...

TIA,
