port-alpha: newfs core dumping in 1.5ZA snapshot

So, I tried installing (on a PC164) with the 1.5ZA snapshot.  "newfs
/dev/rsd0a" dumps core, and then doesn't even do that because (of course)
the miniature root isn't big enough for a core dump.  Anyone else seen
anything like this?
