I've not tried that myself, but if the NetBSD/alpha hardware web page

is still accurate (and not out-of-date), it states in part:

     DEC 3000/500-family systems include the following hardware: 

         ...
         Two Zilog 8530 serial chips, which provide two general-purpose
         serial ports, as well as the keyboard and mouse ports. 
	 ...

     Known Hardware-specific Bugs 

       The following are the known bugs in NetBSD/alpha's support of
       the DEC 3000/500-family systems: 

         The z8530 driver is very buggy. 

This may be your opportunity to improve the driver (if it is buggy)!
