port-alpha: can't su to root

i setup myself up in wheel, but i can't su to root.  almost as if i was typing
in the wrong password, except i can log onto the console as root using the
very same exact password.

From the console:

Mar  8 22:04:08 arthur su: BAD SU wonko to root on /dev/ttyp0

i'm baffled, i've never had this trouble with NetBSD before.
