The person to ask about this is cgd- I *think* (at the risk of
misrepresenting him) he wanted to larn the Xfree86 folks to not require
inb/outb inw/outw type semantics for a platform (difficult to manage in
sparse space alphas w/o BWX extensions). That may or may not be close to
wanting a nice MI interface.
