In a case like this, I usually try it on an i386 to see if it works there,
and to check for pilot error.

If it does work on i386, in _exactly_ the same test, then I would look through
the source for LP64 red flags like `long' in protocol structures (indeed,
`long' anywhere) and I might turn on the various egcs warnings and clean
up the package...
