One other thing to check...  I seem to recall (hazily, sorry!) that there
was some period of time post-1.3, at least a few months ago (such that
1.3I may be affected)  during which the de driver was broken (more than
usual).  

I recall seeing some bad problems on my Alphastation 200 which went away
upon moving to a more recent kernel.  Someone who remembers this better
than I may wish to comment...
