OK, I've updated egcs to 1.1 (to be announced on tech-toolchain shortly),
and found a very minor bug in libg2c that was making f77 programs coredump
only on alpha. (The bug was ludicrously stupid, too. ;)

The egcs compiler suite is now the Alpha's default in NetBSD-current, and
has been tested to work with C, C++, Objective-C, and FORTRAN-77 code.

The fix to libg2c/g2ctypes.c and the rest of the gcc updates should be
available after the next supscan.
