Sorry I wasn't more clear.  The only successful update I've done is via a
directory 
ftp.digital.com:/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/v5.0/alphapc164lx
                                           ^

This directory used to contain both a .exe file, as well as a file named
lx164srm.rom

The files included in later rev directories for the alphapc164lx do not
have the file lx164srm.rom, and the .exe file provided alone isn't enough
on the floppy to update the SRM as near as I can tell.

That is, the last directory, v5.0, allowed me to update, but later ones,
which are the only ones on the server now, do not allow me to update my
SRM, at least to the best of my knowledge...
