I've seen this with our compiler on a number of pkg's.  I have about 10 that
are currently broken with this.

(I coulda sworn battalion worked though)

You can work around this by manually compiling that one object file with NO
optimization, until our compiler is fixed up.  (egcs reportedly doesn't do
this.)
