Actually, the correct solution (which is implemented in the new code)
is to default to one-line-at-a-time, but then use the documented 'sun'
console escape sequence to allow that to be set.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, that escape sequence is only
documented in Sun manual pages.  8-)
