It would be ... far better to throw away those files, at least the
alpha-specific ones, and rewrite them from scratch (using the Linux
files as a base).

They _CANNOT_ be contributed back to the FSF (CMU refused to sign the
appropriate releases; don't bother pestering me or them about them --
i tried for well over 6 months), so people really should endeavor to
replace those changes with versions that can be submitted ASAP.
