Subject: diskless operation lives

I've mixed in some old (pk) and new (ross) code to fix up diskless operation
and NFS paging. Apparently, one of the reasons alpha was more affected than
other ports is because of the particular pattern of dynamic memory allocation
done by the if_de ethernet driver we all use, but that's partly just a guess.

Anyway, please let me know how this works. It would be nice to have in a 1.3.1
patch release.

Thanks.
