I had this _exact_ problem with the ncr driver and an HP drive on
both an Alpha _and_ a Pentium machine.  I suspect it's a bug in the
ncr driver (big surprise! :-), but I have no idea what it is... *sigh*

Unfortunately, my solution was to take back the HP drive and get a
Seagate :(
