You need to switch to the SRM console; NetBSD will not use the ARC
console. On the Multia there's an option somewhere in all of those
ARC menus that talks about switching to the Digital Unix/VMS console
or something like that; that's what you want.

FreeBSD should work just fine for this. Once you've switched to
the SRM console,following the netboot instructions available from
under <http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/alpha/>. If you run into problems,
post exactly what you tried to do, and what happens, and I'll help
you out.
