arch/alpha/alpha/mem.c doesn't want to read out of the range
of 'usable' pages when DEBUG isn't defined. Unfortunately,
this excludes the message buffer. Update to source later today.

I'm getting quite a few panics, but I haven't been able to start
telling what they are yet 'coz dmesg wasn't working yet....
