So, this is what I did. I also made the current reality the 'correct'
behaviour, while i was at it. 8-)
Though it's not particularly useful, you can now put "boot" (i.e. the
second-stage bootstrap) on any (FFS) file system on the boot disk that
you'd like, but you can still only load your kernel off of the 'a'
