I agree that neither installing everything or trying to automagically
figure out what audio system the user prefers make much sense.  And in
most cases I suspect gstreamer gets installed as part of a desktop
environment, which (hopefully) takes care of the backend plugins.

If you're missing plugins-good, the error message (complaining of the
absence of audiosink) is a bit cryptic but googleable.  Having installed
plugins-good, however, the error message goes away but sound still
doesn't work.   A little time spent with the gstreamer documentation and
gst-inspect showed that the oss plugin was missing on my system, because
pkgsrc hives the output plugins out to separate packages whereas
upstream includes them in plugins-good.  So no, it wasn't terribly hard,
but pkgsrc normally Just Works so I think there is room for improvement.
This is really more a gstreamer problem than a quodlibet problem though,
so this is probably the wrong list in which to discuss it.

Yes, but it'll have to wait a few weeks.  I'll check in again when I've
got questions or patches.
