Thanks for updating, but please can you try to keep this in sync with
wip/rust as much as possible?  It would also be helpful to try and
avoid adding lots of commented out sections.  These can always live in
the wip TODO file or similar if they may be useful later rather than
cluttering the already overly long Makefile.

This commit broke SunOS and introduced a number of regressions that
may have been easier to review during your "cvs diff" if there was
less noise and a smaller diff compared to wip.
