Thanks for reverting.

It's not just avoiding breaking systems where fortran doens't work.
It's also about avoiding pulling in a fortran compiler when it is not
necessary.

The real problem here seems to be that configure scripts check for
fortran for no good reason.  The fix would be to understand that and
file a bug upstream if that's really true.
