The security fixes were already in the 1.6.x version that Matthias Drochner
recently committed

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what you are talking about. Wireshark changelogs
are among the best in all OpenSource projects I know of.

There is an announcement with major changes between 1.6.x and 1.8.x which
would have been appropriate in this case.

Thanks for the update. I wanted to switch to 1.8.x at some point anyway.
