Both Firefox and XChat crash on startup. I've not tried any other
GTK+ programs but I expect the result would be the same.

That is good news. In that case you should update the pattern in
"pkgsrc/x11/pixman/Makefile" to only disable SSE on 5.[1-8] and older.
