I don't know, and I can't easily test.

I think it is OK -- for NetBSD-1.6, the effect would be
identical. And whether it helps for Darwin or not, it
wouldn't be worse than before.

btw, on the 1.6 box where I tested this, I had a gcc-3.4
installed from pkgsrc. This was ignored by gcc.mk, and gcc-3.3
installed additionally.
Anyone can tell how to express "gcc3.x or larger"?
