ok, I cannot replicate this. It failed with

/scratch/geography/qgis/work/qgis-1.7.4/src/app/gps/qwtpolar/qwt_polar_plot.h:14:33:
 fatal error: qwt_double_interval.h: No such file or directory

and after digging around at some length I've ascertained the
following:

 - qwtpolar is a separate library and the copy included with qgis is
out of date;

 - the current qwtpolar requires qwt6-qt4, but the one in qgis works
with qwt-qt4, which is the version that's buildlinked;

 - qwt_double_interval.h exists in qwt-qt4, and gets buildlinked at
the top of the include tree, so there aren't special CFLAGS necessary
or anything to see it.

Can you look into what it's actually breaking on?
