Before I install too many gnome 1 garbage...  I see that this package fails 
because:

checking for /var/adm/messages... not found
checking for /var/log/messages... not found
configure: error: Cannot find messages log file, you should specify one in 
--with-messages=.
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/pkgsrc/misc/gnome-utils
*** Error code 1

Is it there something special in your setup that prevents access to that file?
