I am the upstream maintainer of LFT (Layer Four Traceroute), https://pwhois.org/lft/.
pkgsrc net/lft is at 3.80 (distfile lft-3.8, 2018). Upstream is at 4.01
(September 2026); ten releases have shipped in between.

Changes since 3.8, briefly: protocol, firewall-traversal and reliability
fixes; IPv6 end to end; ECMP path enumeration (--ecmp); a path-MTU
discovery mode; JSON/XML/GeoJSON/KML/SVG/GraphViz/Mermaid output; an
ncurses --watch mode with a path-change detector; whob --annotate; and a
hardened privilege model with bounds-checked parsers.

Packaging notes for 4.01:
- libpcap remains the only hard dependency.
- Two optional libraries are new and enabled by default: c-ares
  (asynchronous DNS; --disable-async-dns turns it off) and ncurses
  (--watch display; --disable-ncurses turns it off). Upstream configure
  probes all three with pkg-config first, then falls back to link tests.
- The tarball also builds "whob" (prefix whois client) and ships whob.8.
  The pkgsrc package has never installed either; the patch adds them.

  Every older tarball remains available under /get/, and the old
  MASTER_SITES URL form (/dl/index.who?file=) still works too.
- The DISTNAME/PKGNAME split (lft-3.8 -> lft-3.80) is no longer needed;
  4.01 sorts correctly after 3.80 as a plain version.

I have built 4.01 from this tarball on macOS with c-ares and ncurses
detected, but I do not have a NetBSD machine, so the patch below is
untested on pkgsrc itself. It is a version bump plus two buildlinks and
two extra installed files; a pkgsrc developer with a bulk-build sandbox
should be able to confirm it quickly. Happy to fix anything
NetBSD-specific that turns up.

Compare with https://pwhois.org/lft/ and https://pwhois.org/get/ (index of
release files), which show 4.01 as current. Also: pkg_info lft installs no
