 An update on this, I managed to circumvent the issue by installing the 
 native Slackware 'diffutils' package via upgradepkg:
 https://slackware.pkgs.org/15.0/slackware-x86_64/diffutils-3.8-x86_64-1.txz.html 
 
 
 Still, this took a little while to figure out, and should ideally be 
 handled by pkgsrc somehow, either by making it so that the circular 
 dependency doesn't happen during the bootstrap process or by 
 communicating a fix for the user to perform (such as, in my case, 
 installing a package).
