I now tried this on NetBSD/amd64 8.0 with its default compiler (gcc (nb2
20180327) 5.5.0). I reverted graphics/MesaLib to the default set of
patches, and I could not see the undefined symbol any more. (nm
/usr/pkg/lib/libGL.so.1.6.0 | grep _noop_ shows lots of defined symbols
Then I also re-built graphics/gle, and that went without a hitch.
So the phenomenon I saw seems to be a toolchain-dependent thing (or
possibly it depends on the MesaLib version, since that has changed too;
I didn't retry on NetBSD 7 since I don't have it around any more).
