In my last response I confused FPU with GPU -so never mind what I said
about blender, etc.
After bumping up the VM's ram to 4G, I was able to compile firefox in
virtualbox, and it even runs.
Case closed, I guess? Unless there's any info y'all need from me.

FWIW, likely problems may be:
-- FPU not working as on real hardware (but unlikely with a good
-- running out of memory (dmesg will say "...out of swap, killed")
this seems very likely with a huge C++ program, MAKE_JOBS=5, and 2GB
