BTW - I mention the latter because my quick and dirty workaround is simply `LANG=C verifypc`

(I'll mention as well in passing that it seems GNU tr doesn't validate for UTF-8 the '\254' byte 
presented, which seems to be clearly a bug ... http://iconoun.com/articles/collisions/ )
