 Ok, I see.  So actually, even though freetype2 is installed from Pkgsrc, 
 it is not being used here.  In fact I can see that now from the 
 fontconfig build log, I just didn't think of looking at that aspect 
 previously.
 
 This is getting into hairy ground :)  I'm not at all home with the 
 native X11 support.  But I'm wondering what this says?
 
 cd pkgtools/x11-links && make show-var VARNAME=BUILTIN_X11_TYPE.native
 
 
 I can tell you the easy solution, which is to use X11_TYPE=modular - 
 that ignores the base system X11 libraries.
