 This appears to work also.

The only hitch I've encountered is that firefox-24.0 (like firefox-22)
won't honor the "show my windows and tabs from last time" preference.
It always behaves as if "show my home page" is selected.

Under i386-5.2_STABLE, I was able to convince it to restore tabs,
but under 6.1_STABLE (i386 or amd64) it will not restore tabs.

firefox-23.0.1nb1 appeared to restore windows and tabs without problems.
I'm in the process of building firefox-23.0.1nb1 so I can flip back and
forth to test my casual observations.

In case it's an interation with add-ons, I have NoScript, AdBlockPlus,
and OpenInBrowser installed. Also using multimedia/mplayer-plugin and
 multimedia/gnash.

My home directory resides on a file server accessed by NFS/amd, so 5.2
and 6.1 i386 binaries see the exact same configuration files, etc.,
although I'm careful to not have firefox running as me on each
 simultaneously.
