 Blah, that's a mess...
 
 possible theory: is one or more of the tools linked against a base
 system libelf, such that if pkgsrc's libelf is installed it ends up
 using that at runtime instead? If so, that could certainly explain it
 not working.
 
 If not, I really have no idea...
