Because bash tends to hang[1] on one of my systems I tried building gtk2 with
the default /bin/sh shell and succeeded.

CONFIG_SHELL=bash was introduced with gtk2 2.20, later a comment was added
about a "subtle bashism" in the configure scripts. Is that still there?

remove CONFIG_SHELL=bash line from x11/gtk2/Makefile, build gtk2.
