The following reply was made to PR pkg/35033; it has been noted by GNATS.

Oops. I forgot all about this PR. Unfortunately, for some months now,
I've had no time to give to pkgsrc and it seems unlikely that this will
change anytime soon. I had to remove pkgsrc from my AIX system during a
filesystem reorganization, and never had time to put it back, so I can't
 even re-test this.
If it helps, I do remember the last thing that I figured out (and never
made time to update to the PR) was that the problem wasn't specific to
archivers/bzip2; it appeared to be happening to all packages that used
 libtool to build shared libraries.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place.
Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by
definition, not smart enough to debug it. -- Kernighan
