 Maybe the final slashes on the pathnames can cause quirky behavior. I
 never use them.

 Why is it picking up various files inside the prefix?
 Bootstrap should never do that. Can you try to bootstrap into another
 prefix or temporarily move the prefix and the package database out of
 the way?
