 What does "ls -l work/.tools/bin/automake" say?

 I just tried it. It should be a symlink to automake-1.4, and for me, it is:

 $ ls -l work/.tools/bin/automake
 lrwxr-xr-x  1 roland  wheel  12 Jan 18 00:29 \
      work/.tools/bin/automake -> automake-1.4
